Why box size decides your shipping cost

Most people assume shipping cost is about weight. It is, but only partly. The size of the box can matter just as much, and sometimes more. Here is why a big light box often costs more than a small heavy one.
Carriers charge for space, not just mass
Carriers have limited room in a van or a plane, so they price for the space a parcel takes up as well as its weight. They calculate what is called volumetric weight, which turns a box's dimensions into a weight equivalent. If the volumetric weight is higher than the real weight, you pay for the volume.

A box full of air is a box full of cost
When a small item ships in a big box, the empty space is wasted, but the carrier still charges for it. That is why oversized packaging is a slow leak of money. We size our boxes to the snacks, so you pay to ship snacks, not air.
The right box helps in other ways too
A snug box is not just cheaper. It is also safer, because the contents do not rattle around, and it wastes less packing material. The cheapest and strongest box is usually the one that fits.
