How to read a snack label fast

Snack labels look like a wall of tiny text, but you do not need to read every word. You need a quick scan that tells you the important stuff in about ten seconds. Here is the order to do it in.

Start with the allergen list

If you have a sensitivity, this is the only part that matters and it is usually printed in bold. Dairy, nuts, gluten, soy, sesame. Find your trigger first. If it is there, the rest of the label does not matter and you can put the packet down.

Labels often say may contain as well as contains. The may contain warning is about the factory, not the recipe. If you have a serious allergy, treat both the same way.

Then skim the ingredients

Ingredients are listed by weight, biggest first. The first three or four tell you most of what you need to know. Sugar near the top means it is mostly sugar. A long list of words you cannot say usually means it is highly processed, which is fine sometimes and not others.

Read the back

A short list of real food words is generally a better sign than a long list of numbers, but snacks are snacks. Do not overthink a bag of crisps.

The numbers, quickly

The nutrition panel is useful but it is not the whole story. Calories per portion are worth a glance, and portion size matters more than people think. A small bag can still be three portions. Sugar and salt per hundred grams are the two numbers worth comparing if you care about them.

That is it. Allergens, first few ingredients, and a glance at the numbers. Ten seconds, and you know what you are eating. When in doubt, pick the box that matches your needs from the gift boxes, and ask us if you need the fine print on anything.

Frequently asked questions

What does may contain mean?

It means the product was made in a facility that also handles that allergen, so trace amounts are possible.

Are ingredients really listed by amount?

Yes, biggest ingredient first, smallest last.

Can you tell me if an item fits my diet?

Yes, ask us about any item and we can check the label for you.
